This mediaeval serpent illustrates the classic chart of musical sharps and flats, commonly known as "the circle of 5ths" where each pair of adjacent pitches represents an interval of a perfect 5th. In theory, the "circle" would continue adding fifths without end. This serpent is twisted into the horizontal 8 configuration we know as the mathematical symbol for infinity, a variation of the ancient "ouroboros", symbol of endlessness.
