John Newton (1725-1807) was one of the most notorious slave ship captains in the British fleet. He eventually "found God", was ordained a minister and penned the immortal words "Amazing Grace". His journey of faith has been often compared to that of the biblical Jonah, images of whose story can be found in the four quadrants of the cross. The unique musical notation is from a 17th century system called "shape-notes", whereby each note was assigned a distinctive shape.
